Information

The works featured on this website have until recently remained at Grayswalls, the artists home and studio in Scotland. A large proportion of them have been stored in his studio since his death in 1991, many have remained virtually unseen since their creation.

Although Archibald Peddie did produce a number of commissioned works and there is evidence that a number of pieces have been exhibited, the majority of his paintings and drawings were produced for the artist’s own pleasure.

This website provides the first opportunity to view the extensive range in style of Archibald Peddie’s works produced over 5 decades. Although much of his work has been lost, the remaining collection, contains examples from throughout the artist’s life. The collection ranges from experimental vividly coloured pieces from the 1950′s and 1960′s that are so evocative of their period to the large atmospheric more traditional landscapes from later years. A large quantity of sketches have also survived the damp of the disused stone croft studio at Grayswalls including studies and preliminary sketches for some of the larger paintings.

Original documentation of the works was quite sparse, most pieces are at least signed by the artist; some are annotated with a location and date on the back; most are being slowly identified or dated by referencing known trips, dates, locations and family recollections. The information provided for individual pieces on this website will be expanded as it is discovered.
